What do horseflies look like?

Horseflies, gadflies, and cattle horseflies are among the most common and troublesome insects, whose activity can make life miserable for both people and animals. The rain fly (commonly known as the horsefly) belongs to the family Tabanidae, and its adults reach a body length of 8 to 11 mm. Insects of this species are usually gray in color, with distinct darker stripes visible on the thorax. These insects have an extremely powerful mouthpart—which is one of the reasons why a horsefly bite is so painful. Furthermore, thanks to infrared receptors, the flies detect heat and thus locate their prey.

Occurrence of Horse Flies

They are usually found from May through October, though they are most active in July and August. They particularly favor areas near water, but they are also found on forest or dirt roads. The rain horsefly thrives in humid conditions, which is why it is most active on hot and humid days. Especially before a storm, there is a noticeable increase in the number of female horseflies, which attack their victims, causing painful bites and skin swelling.

Why are the bites of these insects dangerous?

Female horseflies pose a particular threat; they are active from morning until evening, when they search for blood—which they need to lay their eggs. Their bites are so painful because, without using any anesthetic substances, they pierce the skin with their mouthparts and then suck out the blood. A horsefly bite can be dangerous to your health due to its extremely potent venom. After a bite, there is a risk of an allergic reaction, primarily characterized by redness around the bite site, increased skin temperature in that area, and itching.

Is there an effective way to deal with horseflies?

Contrary to appearances, getting rid of horseflies is not impossible. Consistency is key; it allows you to successfully eliminate female insects and, as a result, significantly reduce the reproduction of new individuals. A trap for horseflies and other insects that delivers positive and noticeable results is one of the most effective ways to eliminate these flying pests. The H-Trap reduces the population of these pesky insects by 90% or even 95%. This type of panko® horsefly trap features a specially designed structure: the black rubber ball attracts uninvited pests with both its color and heat, ultimately luring them into the trap.
