Firebrat Traps — The Best Way to Get Rid of Insects

Among the pests we might encounter at home, firebrats are cited as the most common. These are tiny insects that are practically designed to hide from human sight. Many people, surprised by a sudden encounter with them, wonder if they’re harmful to health and—most importantly—how to effectively get rid of them from their homes. We’ll try to answer the most pressing questions.

What are silverfish?

The silverfish (Lepisma saccharina), also known as the sugarfish, is a wingless insect that has lived on Earth for millions of years. It earned its name due to its distinctive appearance, which resembles a small fish. However, the term “silverfish” refers to the chitinous exoskeleton covering the insect’s body, which takes on a silvery or even slightly blue color. Silverfish arrived in Europe from tropical countries, which is why they most often prefer warm and humid rooms. Silverfish are only 7–10 mm long and move with remarkable agility while remaining alert, which is why they can hide unnoticed for long periods of time.

Silverfish are mainly active at night, when the likelihood of contact with humans is reduced. These insects prefer heated and humid rooms as their ideal living conditions. In the bathroom, firebrats primarily settle in nooks and crannies, such as cracks in grout, bathroom cabinets, and areas around the shower, bathtub, and washing machine. In the kitchen, they prefer the gaps between cabinets, the sink, or the trash can. Silverfish are also found in heated garages, storage rooms, and attics. The appearance of silverfish in the home is an important indicator for residents. Since they appear in damp places, it’s worth checking that the ventilation system is working properly and monitoring the humidity level. Such conditions promote the growth of harmful mold, which poses a serious health risk.

Silverfish usually appear in the home when food scraps are left on the table or floor. These insects aren’t picky, and their favorite foods include those containing starch, cellulose, and other polysaccharides (sugars), including the organic adhesives found, for example, in every book. Silverfish can also feed on dead skin cells, hair, or mold spores, so they can be found not only in the kitchen but in all other rooms as well. Thanks to their ability to digest cellulose, silverfish also eat documents, books, and toilet paper. Silverfish, as the name suggests, are attracted to sweet tastes, so be careful with sugar left out in the open, crumbs from sweet baked goods, and other loose foods.

The situation is made even more difficult by the fact that these insects can survive for up to a year without food and live for two to eight years. An abundance of food and conditions conducive to reproduction make them difficult to eradicate, requiring the use of specialized firebrat monitoring traps. Sugar firebrats do not transmit diseases, but they are considered pests because they consume food left behind by humans and can damage items such as books. Furthermore, their presence evokes negative emotions. It is therefore worth knowing which firebrat control method is effective for getting rid of these insects from your home.

How do you get rid of firebrats?

Before you start fighting these pests, it’s a good idea to take a look around your home. Firebrats hide in dark places, nooks, and crevices. It’s a good idea to clean regularly and remove dust so they don’t have constant access to food. There are natural ways to get rid of them in the bathroom or kitchen. Effective remedies include strongly scented essential oils and vinegar. Another homemade silverfish trap is a sheet of paper with double-sided tape, coated with a layer of honey. However, in cases where the infestation has gotten out of control, it’s impossible to eliminate them without using specialized products designed for this purpose. So, which firebrat repellent should you choose?

Well, there’s a very simple solution—the panko® S-TRAP for silverfish. This device is designed based on an understanding of these insects’ specific behaviors, making it an effective tool for monitoring their presence. This trap is also effective against other insects (Thermobiadomestica, Attagenus spp., Anthrenus spp., Psocoptera), so it will work even if you’re not sure exactly which species you’re dealing with. How do you get rid of silverfish in the bathroom, kitchen, pantry, or any other room? Simply place the trap on a flat floor surface where the insects have plenty of food sources (food scraps, paper, dead insects, etc.). The trap will do the rest for you.

It’s made of transparent material and a stable, non-leaking adhesive, and comes with a safe lure—an attractant in tablet form. The firebrat bait effectively attracts the insects, and the patented “lure and trap” system ensures continuous operation even in damp and dusty environments. Because the trap is transparent, you can easily tell if any firebrats have been caught without having to look inside.

Using the S-TRAP

The panko® S-TRAP firebrat trap is recommended when these insects are spotted in the home, especially in the bathroom. It is also recommended as a way to capture these dangerous insects in restaurants, libraries, and museums. The firebrat monitoring trap is designed to work using an active ingredient in a tablet. It has no irritating odor and releases the active ingredient over a long period of time. The S-Trap firebrat treatment is more effective than aerosol silverfish traps. It does not run out as quickly and also reduces the risk of human poisoning.

How can you effectively prevent silverfish from returning?

Eliminating silverfish with traps and insecticides is only the first step. To effectively prevent their return, it’s worth implementing preventive measures. Controlling humidity levels is key. Silverfish prefer warm, humid environments, so ensure proper ventilation in the bathroom, regularly dry out grout lines, and avoid leaving damp fabrics in enclosed spaces for extended periods.

Sealing cracks in floors, walls, and furniture will also reduce the number of hiding places for these insects. It’s also worth using natural remedies against firebrats—lavender, citrus, or cedarwood essential oils are substances that effectively deter firebrats from infesting rooms.

By combining regular preventive measures with the use of effective S-TRAP firebrat traps, you can not only eliminate the problem but also prevent it from recurring, ensuring greater comfort and hygiene for yourself and your household in everyday life.

Why choose our firebrat traps?

The silver firebrat trap from the panko® line is a modern and effective trap that helps control the problem of these unwanted insects in homes. S-TRAP features a specially designed structure that attracts firebrats while preventing them from escaping the trap. Its compact, sleek design makes it easy to place in hard-to-reach areas where firebrats are most commonly found, such as bathrooms, kitchens, or basements.

S-TRAP traps are a solution designed for long-term control of silverfish populations, which can be a persistent problem in homes. Thanks to the trap’s discreet design, panko® can effectively eliminate these insects without disrupting the aesthetics of your interior. The traps’ high effectiveness stems from the attractiveness of the lures, which draw firebrats into the trap. The combination of these features makes S-TRAP firebrat traps the ideal solution for both prevention and control of insect infestations—we invite you to check out our product lineup!
